Electronic Paper Displays

Electronic paper goes by many names: e-paper, electronic ink and e ink. All of these names describe the same thing: a technology that mimics the appearance of ordinary ink on paper, bypassing the downsides of traditional displays, such as glare and light pollution. Imagine you took a pen and jotted down something in a notebook - that is the crispness of image you get when using an electronic paper display.

At the basis of e-paper technology are tiny particles about the diameter of a human hair. Each e-paper display is made up of millions of small capsules filled with these particles suspended in fluid. Differently charged particles have different colors; when a positive or negative electric field is applied, the corresponding particles will move to the top of the capsule and make the surface of the display appear in that color.

This means that an e-paper display will reflect light like paper and will provide a wider viewing angle than most other displays. It will also use very little energy to display content and will hold a static image indefinitely, even without electricity.

The following are technical specifications for supported e-paper displays used in all Visionect products and solutions.

Warning

Caution! Electronic paper displays and their Visionect System Boards are highly sensitive and should be handled with care. The display surface might break when dropped or bumped on a hard surface. Touching display drivers and connectors should be avoided. Any possible disconnecting or reconnecting of the display should be handled with great care and only after removing any power supply.
